Living Like a Weasel
A mind-changing unexpected encounter Didnt we all had angiotensin-converting enzyme or several moments in action that made you see yourself, the way you live in a whole new billet? That special moment where it felt like lightning struck you and you permuted your perspective of animateness? For some of you might have been the birth of your child or the moving to a different surface atomic number 18a? To Dillard it was the unexpected encounter with a weasel. Annie Dillard was born in 1945 and it seems like she always had a thirst for reading, pen and overall literature. She studied literature and creative writing and has wrote several books, novels and essays and notwithstanding won the Pulitzer Price for Pilgrim at the Creek. Thus I think it was really inte detaining to read one of her shorter works donjon Like a Weasel, a story in which Annie Dillard describes her magical unexpected encounter with a Weasel in six dowerys. Dillard starts out by directly pointing to the wease l topic by introducing it with a short 4 word strong belief A weasel is wild(Diyanni, p. 97).She goes on with a question to get the readers attention and let them be subdivision of her journey, Who knows what he thinks (Diyanni, p. 97). A detailed description of a weasels hunting habit follows. It almost come across as a beast in a horror movie and the adjectives intensify the mental image, he bites his prey by the neck, either splitting the jugular vein at the throat or crunching the witticism at the base of the skull(Diyanni, p. 97). She uses the ii comparisons of a rattle snake and a sticky label to sharpen the image of the weasel that will never let go once it sunk its teeth in something. The ascendent(a) part creates a negative image of a wild weasel. In the second part Dillard explains why she knows all the previous stated facts in the introduction because she recently saw a weasel. After she before long mentions this fact she guides us in to her universe away from ci vilization. Hollis Pond, also called Murrays Pond. Her description is again very detailed, such as including the number 6 two times, With six inches of water and six thousand lily pads.Six is considered to be the most harmonious number, with a loving and caring nature (www. numerology. com) and underlines the cozy impression the reader gets when she describes the peaceful, to Dillard even magical pond, from the distant shore they look like miracles itself, complete with miracles nonchalance (Diyanni, p. 98). Even though suburban area is a common term Dillard almost makes it seem like Hollis Pond is an own little world named suburbia, This, mind you, suburbia (Diyanni, p. 98), placed in the middle of civilization. besides when you are there you feel like you are in a completely different place, where nothing of the rest of the world is noticable. She even defines frontiers of her suburbia, there is a 55 mph highway at one end of the pond, and a pair of nesting woodland ducks at the other (Diyanni, p. 100). Furthermore Dillard repeats the number quintuple twice, It is a five-minute walk, 55mph highway. The number five symbolizes dynamic and energy, it represents the life style of every days life, that is mostly hectic and fast, people do not rest and take in the moment.Dillard bans this hectic environment from her world, in which she is the queen. It seems like she is above it and sits on a throne-like bench, which is support by several adjectives such as upholstered bench, upper, plush jetty raised, watching the lily pads at my feet (Diyanni, p. 99). Then all of a sudden she has an unexpected encounter with the weasel. Her upper dominant sic is mentioned once more, I was looking down at the weasel, who was looking up at me (Diyanni, p. 99).The third part of Dillards essay begins with the description of the weasel. However it is not nearly as negative as it was in the beginning but rather positive, thin as a curve, a muscled ribbon, brown as fruitwood, s oft furred (Diyanni, p. 99). Both, human and animal, exchange glances and hold eye-contact for several seconds. For Dillard it seems to be a magical moment as if the two have a mutual, unspoken understanding and goes on with emphasizing this for her extremely special meeting. The weasel is the one to let on strike the eye contact, but Dillard tries to gain it again. This is the first clear moment where the theme wildness and deprivation versus consciousness and choice comes up. For the weasel it was nothing special, it only checked if the human would harm it in any way. However due to the humans consciousness Dillard interprets a whole new meaning into this encounter, for a minute she was mentally connected with an wild animal. She even asks herself what a weasel might think and thus puts it on the same level as human. furcate four continues with the change that the unexpected meeting has caused in Dillard. It seems like her mind switched and experienced an eye- hander. Now Dil lard is witting of the fact that she should live life to the fullest, just like the weasel does I would like to live as I should (Diyanni, p. 100), that she needs to change her previous life style, I would like to live as I should (Diyanni, p. 100). Part five begins with regrets that she has about her life, I missed my chance. The whole two dissevers are pronounced with ways she could life. She uses various metaphors and comparisons as if she was a weasel but those stylistic device do not of necessity explain how she wants to change her life style, but rather establishes the question of the social interaction and living with from each one other Could two live under the wild rose? We could you know. She answers all questions in the second paragraph that she asked herself asked in the first, A weasel doesnt attack anything a weasel lives as he is meant to (Diyanni, p. 101) The sixth and last part is about Dillards conviction, that the weasels life can be used as an example. That y ou should free yourself from all consciousness and live in necessity, to open up and enjoy life, to put your inside and your feelings to the outside and strip down to the bones, let your musky course fall off in shreds (Diyanni, p. 101). I enjoyed reading this essay and for myself gained a different perspective off of it. However I think Dillard saw something that was not there. She interpreted a new life perspective into her encounter with a weasel. It is a good example of that human beings are superior to all other animals. We have consciousness and try to connect events and make sense out of them. We constantly look for change and strive for better. To me Dillard took it a notch to far with the mind connecting, however it made me think, it convinced me that sometimes that you need to grab life by its throat and take it all in without thinking too much, assume the day and once in a while, live a little mindless. Explore Shakespeareââ¬â¢s presentation of love in ââ¬ÅAs You Like Itââ¬Â Essay
Love has eer been a fore near feature of the plays written by William Shakespe be and As You Like It is no exception with cut regularly being equal throughout the play in a variety of ways.Just wish well in Shakespe bes other works As You Like It is also broken down in to a main plot, which is then accompanied by smaller sub-plots that are scattered thorughout the play. Shakerspeare along with the play As You Like It skillfully uses these plots well to demonstrate various types of bang. One variety of fare that Shakespeare anylyses deeply is that of baronial revel, whose ideas featured heavily around the f operate that chouse brings suffering and agony to the l everywhere and the theory that the firearmly lover is controlled by his mistress to whom he must adhere to. Courtly Love had become a popular subject to write about during Shakespeares Elizabethan period and was also strongly unmixed in english literature for centuries previously. The impression of coarse romance is also expressed in As You Like It , in which characters in rural countryside areas appear to act freely and joyfully , and this causes kins to revel successfully and contently. In other terminology Pastoral romance seems to betray the countryside in stories as some signifier of catalyst speeding up the progress and success of overall affinitys. On the other hand biography in the court seems to lack this optimism and instead living in developed areas (towns, villages, cities etc) seems to damage love surrounded by characters collectable to the stress and demand of court life. This type of romance is also strongly associated with disguise and the model of characters falling in love with the opposite sex pull down when in disguise. The love in Shakespeares plays was recognised by the public of the Elizabethan period who had a good understanding about how unfeigned and pure love was between characters along with a good perception of the characters personalities (such as social status) still through the language they spoke during the play. The relationships in As You Like It are tested in genius way or another, as most turn in to overcome obstacles and problems in order to succeed The special relationships we see in the play symbolize and highlight the variant types of love that William Shakespeare wishes to explore. For example the familial love between the brothers of Orlando and Oliver, Duke Frederick and Duke Senior are emphasized callable to the fact that both relationships are struggling and are under much tension when in normal circumstances you would bear this type of Familial relationship to prosper solidily, nevertheless alternatively im break off crumbled consistently. The relationship amid Orlando and his eldest borther, Oliver has r all(prenominal)ed an even much dire state, due to the recent event of their nonplus Sir Rowland de Boys tragically dying for reasons unknown to us. Since this death of Sir Rowland de Boys Oliver and Orlando have been at involution over the acts of Oliver who is restricting Orlando from receiving a gentlemans education even though their father had wished him to have one. Both characters deal with this issue by becoming alter and ill-tempered towards each other. This is repointn in symbolise 1 horizon 1 where Oliver saysWilt thou lay hands on me, villain?Oliver and Orlandos relationship changes significantly during the course of the play and it is seen that the countryside and its links to pastoral romance are responsible for the reclamation of their relationship. This is true because the turning point of their complex relationship takes place in the countryside to where Orlandos act of decency, (when he saves Olivers life from a viscous Lioness) provokes Oliver to want to become a more amiable person. in like manner the romantic relationships of the brothers between Rosalind and Celia respectfully seems to show that the concept of pastoral romance is functioning between them and thence ca utilize them to be more loving people. Understandably this fri fetch uply environment causes their own familial relationship to blossom. This transformation in their relationship is represented well when Oliver is lay asideing Orlandos bloody handkerchief to Ganymede in shape 4 motion-picture show 2. In this scene he confesses about his shameful past by locutionTwas I, but tis not I. I do not shame To tell you what I was, since my conversion So sweetly tastes, being the thing I am.This indicates that he is aware that he was in the wrong before, but now values and loves his younger brother, even more so that he obeyed Orlandos order to deliver his handkerchief.Another familial relationship present in the play is that of Duke Senior and his younger brother Duke Frederick. This situation relationship is struggling due to the fact that Duke Senior has been exiled from the court by his usurping brother Duke Frederick. This un soundified act by Duke Frederick has left the tw o distant and bitter towards each other. This is shown in Act 2 gibe 3 when Duke Frederick is in the process of exiling Rosalind, the daughter of the banished Duke Senior. Duke Fredericks tells Rosalind the reason for her being exiled is becauseThou art thy fathers daughter. Theres enough. This shows that there is obviously some abhorrence between the two brothers, especially on Duke Fredericks let out.Duke Senior and Duke Frederick react to this involution in contrasting ways. Duke Senior seems to make the most out of the situation he has found himself in to positive effect. He does this to an extent that hes actually enjoying life away from the court. On the other hand Duke Frederick deals with their dispute by becoming heated and showing irrational behavior (This is shown when out of blue he aggressively orders Rosalind to leave the court and even goes as far as saying he will kill her if she was not to obey) in play. The hatred of Duke Frederick towards Duke Senior is incredib ly similar to that of Oliver towards to Orlando, in that there seems to be no obvious reason for wherefore they should detest their brothers so much. But just like Oliver and Orlando, Duke Frederick and Duke Seniors relationships turns around positively in the latter stages of the play. This turn of events is due to the remarkable change of mind from Duke Frederick who persuaded by an old religious man on the outskirts of the set to not invade the Forest of Ardenne decides to conclude his search for his brother. Instead, as were told by Jacques de Boys in Act 5 Scene 4 that heAfter some question with him, was reborn Both from his enterprise and from the world, His crown bequeathing to his banished brother, And all their lands restored to them again That were with him exiledThis act of love shown by Duke Frederick towards Duke Senior and his confederation could also be due to the powers the countryside possesses through pastoral romance. This could be explained by the way that Duk e Frederick has a dramatic change of heart when entering the forest and he also wants to be freed from court life by deciding to join a monastery.A prominent relationship on display in As You Like is between the inseparable cousins that are Rosalind and Celia. This relationship is under strain mainly just because of the complications ring their fathers relationship. They have been brought in to the thick of their fathers own personal conflict due to Duke Fredericks antics, referring to him wanting to exile Rosalind and consequently separate Rosalind and Celia.Rosalind and Celia respond to the antics of their fathers positively, by promising to each other that theyll stand by each other religiously through the hard times that are facing them, causing them both to flee from the court together. This united type behavior form the cousins shows the sense of hearing that this love is extremely solid and their love for each other is cannot be interrogativeed. This is shown when Celia r esponds to her fathers actions by saying to Rosalind in Act 1 Scene 3Prithee, be cheerful. Knowst thou not the duke Hath banished me, his daughter?moreover Rosalind and Celia decide to overcome their complications by fleeing to the Forest of Ardenne to find refuge. This seems to work divid terminals, as when they are in the forest the bridge seems more relaxed and joyful than they were when they were generating tentative feelings back at the court. This is shown through the way they act more freely and seem more comfortable expressing their views on topics than they were in the court. They also becoming more umbrageous to falling in love, and this shows in the way they fall in love with Orlando and Oliver. All this makes one presume that pastoral romance is in progress with this pair.A different type of alliance is show using go game the servant and Orlando in the play As You Like It. Between these two characters is dutiful love shown from both sides. The obstacle that this exact relationships faces is down to the misbehavior shown from Orlandos brother Oliver, who Adam says is plotting to kill Orlando. The pair then address this situation in the same way as Celia and Rosalind did, by escaping in to the forest. This is where Adams dutiful love is evident when he swears allegiance to Orlando in Act 2 Scene 3 by sayingHere is the gold. All this I give you. Let me be your servant.Theses words are very strong, as Adam shows he will give Orlando everything he has even his fortunes just so that Orlando is able to be content and safe.Further on in the play Orlando also shows committal pointing to Adam. This dutiful love is expressed in the way Orlando carries Adam in to shelter and vows to find his badly servant food he even makes a fool of himself in front of Duke Senior and his Lords purely in attempting to find his loyal servant some much-needed food. This dutiful love shown on Orlandos part can be seen in the way he tells Adam in Act 2 Scene 6Come, I will b ear thee to some shelter, and thou shalt not die for lack of a dinner if there live anything in this desertOnce again you can say that the concept of pastoral romance has left this pair living happily ever after as it looks to have solved all their problems, which they have now left at the court.A different relationship represented in As You Like It is that of Silvius and volt. In this relationship the love is not shared from Phoebe in contrast to Silvius who seems to be suffering much grief and pain due to his immense and obsessive love for Phoebe. Both characters face their dispute concerning their conflicting views by becoming frustrated, Silvius because he cannot obtain Phoebes love and Phoebe because of Silvius constant pleas for her to welcome his fondness for her.The evidence to show that Phoebe does not show the same affection for Silvius can be seen when she comments on how much shed sort of not be in a romantic relationship with Silvius in Act 3 Scene 5 by saying to Celia (dressed as Ganymede)Sweet youth, I pray you chide a year together. I had rather hear you chide than this man woo. This idea that Silvius is suffering thanks to the elements of love is very similar to the objectives of formal love.Obviously this situation cuts problematic for it to be possible for Silviuss and Pheobes relationship to advance, but a few twists occurring at the end of the play enable this couple to surprisingly tie the knot. The events which engineer Silvius and Phoebe to come together can be argued to be thanks to the pastoral romance theme, which is seen on a frequent basis in this play. This is true as pastoral romance is well known for its characters in disguise and its the disguise of Rosalind (Ganymede) that actually plays the vital role in bringing Silvius and Phoebe together. convey to Rosalinds slyness Silvius finally is able to be with Phoebe and it seems that she shows some genuine affection towards Silvius. This is perceptible when she says in Act 5 Sce ne 4 to SilviusI will not eat my word. directly thou art mine, Thy faith my fancy to thee doth combine.A relationship that does not develop until the tail end of the play As You Like It is between that of Oliver and Celia.Celia who is dressed up as Aliena looks to fall in love with Oliver at first sight and these provides an ironic end for the character Celia in the play. This is an accurate observation, because during the play Celia is seen derisive her dear friend Rosalind about the hastiness about her love for Orlando. This is another classic example of how pastoral romance is a striking feature of the play, because even though Celia has been ridiculing Rosalind love for Orlando it seems that even she is eventually trance by the powers of the countryside air and decides to marry a man whom she has just met.A unique relationship in the play is that of Pheobe and Ganymede. This is correct, as Phoebe is falling for Rosalind in disguise, without being informed. The relationship bet ween these two characters is a clear example of the cultivated love evident in As You Like It, because of the agony and frustration, which Pheobe endures due to her love Ganymede. Ganymede reacts to Phoebes attempts to win her heart by saying in Act 3 Scene 5I pray you, do not fall in love with me, For I am falser than vows made in wine. This dismissal of Phoebes love on Ganymedes part shows that Ganymede has no interest in Phoebe at all, but despite this in true courtly love fashion Phoebes decides to persist with her quest to win Ganymedes heart. In the end their relationship disintergrates when Phoebe says in Act 5 Scene 4If sight and shape be true, Why then, my love adieu. The most influential relationship in the whole of the play is beyond doubt that of between Rosalind and Orlando. This is true, as this relationship seems to dictate the course of the storyline. This relationship falls down heavily in to the elements of stereotypical pastoral romantic stories. This is correct, as Orlando seems to endure a lot of agony and pain over the course of the play..I will finish this laterIn conclusion I believe Shakespeare has shown us that men actually behave in the same way as women when in love. The evidence ot prove this is the behaviour of most characters in the play. Most of these characters endure large amounts of suffering

The Virtuous Character of Desdemona
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as is virtue. Such is the case of the virtue of the character Desdemona, from the play The Tragedy of Othello, by William Shakespe be. Desdemona was shown as a pocket-sized moral, virtue less female in the essay The Character of Desdemona by tin can Quincy Adams. Contrary to this, the current reader can see that Shakespeare actu wholey showed her to be a virtuous and loving soul, whose own artlessness lead to her demise. Is Desdemona a virtuous character? Is there anyone who can be so self-sacrificing?Shakespeare is vigilant to give her a few minor flaws- her treatment of Brabantio, her stubborn persistence active Cassio, her lie about the handkerchief- to make her realistic. But the overall character of Desdemona is of high stature, it is her very innocence that makes her a victim of circumstance. As a young Venetian woman, Desdemona has lived a sheltered life in her fathers home. This sheltering gave her an innate passion for all the thi ngs that she was denied. She was denied all things that a forward-looking day women would be allowed to do, including the skillful to fall in love with somebody free of social status, age or race. She then falls in love, probably for the first date, with a man several years older than herself, from a faraway land, and of a different race. She is captivated by the mans stories and wishes she were a man so that she might also have an exciting life, the very life she was denied because of her beingness a women. Knowing that her father would disapprove of her marriage to such a man, she elopes with Othello. Desdemona is portrayed as a lovely, courageous, gentle woman, deeply in love with her husband. just, she is not a perfect character but her morals, and her virtues are still there. In the play Desdemona says to her father Brabantio, (I,iii180) My noble father, I do perceive here a divided up duty To you I am bound for life and education My life and education twain do learn me H ow to respect you you are the lord of duty. No matter what the circumstances whitethorn be, she never stopped respecting her father. Though still she had to follow her heart. Her lover Othello says of her, She gave me for my pains a world of sighs (I,iii168) However one person in time may see an event or character, another person in another time can perceive the same to be of completely different meanings. stern Quincy Adams says that Desdemona lacks virtues and all she does is cause her father grief to his dying bed. He says that the passion of Desdemona for Othello is unnatural, solely and exclusively because of his color. Which if looked at by todays standards would hold of no significance what the persons skin color is. Second he says that her elopement to him, and secret marriage with him, indicate a personal character not only very insufficient in delicacy, but totally regardless of filial duty, of female modesty, and of ingenuous shame.Third he states, her lack in delicacy is discernible in her conduct and discourse throughout the play. Altogether he thinks that she has through nothing but equipment casualty when she ran away for her love, and that she has low morals and no virtues because she has wronged her father. In contrast to what John Quincy Adams said of the character of Desdemona, proof from the play itself states otherwise. If virtue no delighted beauty lack, Your son-in-law is far much fair than black, John Quincy Adams uses that quote to illustrate how the skin color love affair had shown Desdemona to be of low morals, and that she had committed an unnatural thing. When as seen by todays standards it is perfectly all right for two people of different races, ages, sexes, nationality and religions to be in love and to wed. Another quote from the play apply by John Q. Adams is, With the Moor, sayst thou? Who would be a father? that quote helps to illustrate how the father was impairment by the actions of his daughter. When in fact Desdem ona meant no harm to her father, she simply wanted to do whats right as is said by Iago, She that was ever fair and never proud, Had tongue at will and til now was never loud (II,i158).Also shown to us by Desdemona herself is how she felt towards her father all along, again proving wrong the portrayal of her by John Q. Adams, (I,iii180) My noble father, I do perceive here a divided duty To you I am bound for life and education My life and education both do learn me How to respect you you are the lord of duty. Desdemona was loved by many, including Othello, and rightfully so, But that I love the gentle Desdemona (I,ii24). in time John Q. Adams is quoted saying himself in his essay, Desdemona, is amiable and lovely, towards the top of his last paragraph. Even he in the end admitted to the fact that Desdemonas character is amiable, lovely, virtuous, and still retains its morals. Many people from separate time periods can look at Desdemona in different ways. The modern reader will app ly the modern aspects of life to the story and look at it from that perspective, while someone like John Quincy Adams looks at it from the mass of the time period he lived in.

It may actually be higher if I do well in my well-nigh difficult class. I met some great friends on the starting signal week of school and we formed a study group that meets each week.
